I recieved a confirmation email today that we have officially purchased a share in the Dragonfly Farms CSA for this summer. CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture and is basically us buying into a number of local farms. Local for us goes up into PA, but its still relatively local. We'll be splitting our share this year with the Perschbachers and the Fertigs. I'm not sure exactly how that will work out concerning how much food we'll all actually have, but it sure helps on the costs.

We will recieve approx. one bushel of fresh fruit and vegetables every week from May through September. Along with that we'll get fresh baked bread, cheese, honey, eggs, flowers, mushrooms, coffee, dog treats, jam, jelly, and wine vinegar. Total cost is $1595, which comes out to about $30 a week per family. Think about what you spend on all that stuff and tell me you wouldn't feel better about spending an extra $5 and getting farm fresh produce and eggs rather than stuff trucked halfway around the country. I'm super psyched about it.

Here is a link to Dragonfly Farms. Their website is really nice and you can find out all about their CSA on the CSA page.

This link will take you to a local harvest site all about CSAs where you can search for a CSA in your area. Consider doing this as an alternative to grocery store shopping. It not only gets you more involved in the process of farming but allows you access to fresher, healthier foods.

We have that around here, and I almost joined because it's all organic farms. However, it's just me living here and I couldn't possibly eat all that.

Bummer. I wish they offered smaller "shares" for single people.

Enjoy that good stuff!

You should contact the farms running the CSA and see if any one else has inquired about half shares. Maybe someone else in your general area is looking for the same thing.
